I went to church with my mother this morning. She warned me that the pastor can sometimes get a bit wordy, so I brought my pen and notebook. I did listen, I promise (The sermon was about the Matrix. Seriously), but I also wrote a very moving scene for my novel, where Leah mourns the death of her best friend, goes into a deep depression and then has a life-altering encounter with God.
I’m writing, and I’m writing, and the words just flow like … well, like ink from my pen. 0_o How about like water from an overflowing well? Okay, back to the story. God tells Leah that she needs to get back home and make some hard choices. She realizes just exactly to Whom she is speaking, and she falls to the ground in trembling awe. And then out comes this:
***
Her flesh tightened and tingling, beginning at her scalp. As it flowed through her body, her knees buckled and she fell to the ground.
“My lord,” she whispered. “Have you come to take me to the land of the dead?”
“You don’t listen too well, do you?”
***
You don’t listen too well? What sort of God speaks like that? It’s true, though. Leah is so certain that she is right that she rarely has time to listen to what anyone else has to say. I’m loving how this character is developing. She’s bossy and self-righteous at times, but it’s often because she’s right. I can imagine her saying, “Humble? Of course I’m humble. I’m the most humble person I know.”
As for the sermon, the pastor talked about how God is inviting us to enter in to the Kingdom of God, which, like the Matrix, is all around us but invisible to our eyes. He even showed us the clip where Morpheus offers Neo the red and blue pills. All I could think was that the pastor should perhaps watch the rest of the movie, the part where Neo discovers the hidden reality is horrible. Because if life mimics the Matrix movie, and God’s kingdom is the True Reality, I’ll take the blue pill.
Oh, and I wrote almost a thousand words during church. My word count is now 33, 564 words. I really want to hit 50,000 before the end of the month.
