The Interrobang

Have you ever heard of such a thing? According to Wikipedia *, the interrobang was invented in 1962 by Martin K. Speckter. The purpose of the interrobang is to denote such sentences which require both a question mark and an exclamation point.

The interrobang has never caught on as a standard punctuation mark, although it’s part of Microsoft’s Wingding 2 collection.

Grammatical rules state that the exclamation point is enough when writing an exclamatory question.

I had no idea that a word existed for this combination of exclamation point and question mark.

* I know. Wikipedia is a poor source of accurate information because anyone can log in and edit the information. Have you noticed, though, that almost everyone uses it? I’ve spoken with people who don’t know what search engines are, but they know how to look things up in Wikipedia.
